The Trick: Push Down, Then Swing Forward

The Gen 2 Prius headlight assembly does not require removing the bumper or any panels. The bulb is accessed from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay. The motion that trips people up: you push the bulb holder down first, then swing it forward toward the front of the car to release it. Pulling straight back doesn't work.

From the field (May 2014): Last replaced 5/11/2014. Sylvania Silverstar bulbs lasted about 4โ€“6 months before noticeably dimming. If you want longer life between changes, step up to the Ultra version or consider an HID conversion.
Check your trim before buying anything. Most Gen 2 Prius headlights are halogen (9003/H4 bulb). But Touring trim and Package 4 cars came with factory HID/xenon projectors โ€” those use a D2R bulb (2004โ€“2005) or D4R bulb (2006โ€“2009), which are completely different and much more expensive. If your headlights have a bright bluish-white output and your dash has an auto-leveling setting, you have HIDs. Do not put a halogen bulb in an HID housing.

Halogen Models: 9003 / HB2 / H4

The halogen Gen 2 Prius uses a 9003 / HB2 / H4 bulb for the combined low/high beam headlight. All three names refer to the same dual-filament bulb. Applies to all halogen-equipped 2004โ€“2009 cars.

BulbPrice (pair)LifespanNotes
Sylvania Basic ~$15 1โ€“2 years Budget option. Dim compared to OEM after a few months.
Sylvania Silverstar ~$25 4โ€“6 months Brighter but shorter-lived. Replace in pairs โ€” if one goes, the other follows soon.
Sylvania Silverstar Ultra ~$33โ€“$40 6โ€“12 months Best halogen option. Worth the extra cost for nighttime driving. Confirmed fit on Gen 2 Prius (bought 8 times).
LED conversion (H4 LED) $30โ€“$80 5+ years Plug-and-play H4 LED kits exist, but are not DOT-compliant for US street use in halogen housings. CANBUS errors causing dashboard warning lights are a known issue on some Gen 2 years โ€” check if the kit includes a CANBUS decoder. Cheap LEDs also scatter light poorly and create glare. Do your research before buying.
Always replace bulbs in pairs. If one burns out, the other is close behind. Replacing both at the same time saves you from doing this job again in a month.

Additional tips

Step-by-Step

Passenger side: The windshield washer fluid reservoir sits directly behind the passenger headlight. You'll need to unclip it from its bracket and shift it aside to get your hand in. It snaps back in easily โ€” no tools required, just extra time.
  1. Turn off the car and open the hood.
  2. Locate the back of the headlight housing on the side you're replacing. You'll see a rubber dust cover โ€” twist it counterclockwise and pull it off.
  3. The bulb is held in by a wire retaining clip. Unhook the clip by pressing the tab and swinging it aside.
  4. To remove the bulb: push it down, then swing it forward toward the front of the car. It will release. Do not pull straight back.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the old bulb.
  6. Do not touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oils cause hot spots that shorten bulb life. Use a clean cloth or gloves.
  7. Connect the electrical connector to the new bulb.
  8. Insert the new bulb, swing it back into position, and lock the wire clip.
  9. Replace the rubber dust cover โ€” twist clockwise to lock.
  10. Test before closing the hood.

Fog Lights (Touring & Package 4 Trims)

The Gen 2 Prius has fog lights on Touring trim and Package 4 option โ€” not all cars. If your car has fog lights, the bulb is a 9006 (HB4), 12V 55W. OEM part number: 90981-13075. These are a separate job from the headlights and are accessed from underneath the front bumper.

Notes from the Field

The push-down-then-forward motion is the one thing that trips everyone up the first time. Once you feel it click into the release position it's obvious โ€” but nothing about the housing design hints at it visually.

Sylvania Silverstar bulbs are brighter than stock but they burn out faster than their marketing suggests. The Ultra version lasts meaningfully longer. If you're replacing bulbs more than once a year, just do the LED conversion โ€” it's plug-and-play on the Gen 2 and you'll never think about headlights again.
