No tools needed. Takes about 5 minutes once you know the trick.
The Gen 2 Prius headlight assembly does not require removing the bumper or any panels. The bulb is accessed from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay. The motion that trips people up: you push the bulb holder down first, then swing it forward toward the front of the car to release it. Pulling straight back doesn't work.
The Gen 2 Prius uses a 9003 / HB2 / H4 bulb for the combined low/high beam headlight. Confirm your year before buying โ 2004โ2009 are the same.
| Bulb | Price (pair) | Lifespan | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sylvania Basic | ~$15 | 1โ2 years | Budget option. Dim compared to OEM after a few months. |
| Sylvania Silverstar | ~$25 | 4โ6 months | Brighter but shorter-lived. Replace in pairs โ if one goes, the other follows soon. |
| Sylvania Silverstar Ultra | ~$33โ$40 | 6โ12 months | Best halogen option. Worth the extra cost for nighttime driving. |
| LED conversion (H4 LED) | $30โ$80 | 5+ years | Plug-and-play LED kits exist for H4. Verify beam pattern before buying โ cheap LEDs scatter light poorly. |
The push-down-then-forward motion is the one thing that trips everyone up the first time. Once you feel it click into the release position it's obvious โ but nothing about the housing design hints at it visually.
Sylvania Silverstar bulbs are brighter than stock but they burn out faster than their marketing suggests. The Ultra version lasts meaningfully longer. If you're replacing bulbs more than once a year, just do the LED conversion โ it's plug-and-play on the Gen 2 and you'll never think about headlights again.
